World's Oldest Dog Turns 147 Years Old

World's Oldest Dog Turns 147 Years Old

In only-depressing-if-you-want-to-see-it-that-way news, the oldest dog in the world turned 21 years old at a birthday celebration in New York City.

Chanel the Dachshund is 147 years old In dog years, which means that if she was a human she'd have been born before Darwin published the Origin of Species.

Obviously, Chanel is in a bad way. Her red hair faded to white many years ago, and her cataracts mean she has to wear sunglasses. Her home is kept at a constant 72 degrees Fahrenheit, she only goes out in summer.

All that means that her birthday surrounded by the world's slavering media in Manhattan was probably the most stressful experience of her life.

Still, for those of you worried that Chanel may not be long for the world there is hope. The previous holder of the Guinness World Records oldest dog title died last year at the grand old age of 28. So don't give up yet, Chanel -- there are still plenty more trees to spray with urine before you drop your sunglasses.
